Looking to add a little more joy and a lot more green to your life? Birds and Bees Nursery has been helping Portland homes and gardens thrive since 2012. It is a plant shop with deep roots, lots of love, and a strong sense of purpose.
The nursery is owned by Caitlin Gaul and Amanda Lepley Simard, two lifelong friends who first met at Lincoln High School in the 1990s. Their bond was built on shared laughter, creative spirit, and a deep appreciation for nature. Years later, that friendship grew into a dream of building something together – something that would bring beauty, knowledge, and community to their hometown.
That dream became Birds and Bees, a women owned and Black owned nursery in the heart of Southeast Portland. From the beginning, Caitlin and Amanda set out to create more than just a place to buy plants. They wanted a space where people could feel inspired, supported, and connected to something bigger, whether that meant growing food in a backyard, caring for a first houseplant, or learning how to build a pollinator friendly garden.
Today, the nursery is a joyful, welcoming place filled with lush greenery and thoughtful touches. The selection includes a wide variety of native plants, veggie starts, indoor favorites, and seasonal flowers. There are organic gardening tools and supplies, wild bird feeders and seed, locally made gifts, and even beneficial insects for natural pest control.
Every product is chosen with care, and the team is always ready to share advice, answer questions, and celebrate your plant victories, no matter how small. Whether you are a seasoned gardener or just figuring out how much to water a fern, you will feel at home here.
Caitlin and Amanda also give back in meaningful ways, supporting local organizations and causes that reflect their values of equity, sustainability, and community care. Their love for Portland runs deep, and it shows in every corner of the shop.
So if you are ready to add more life to your space, find your next favorite plant, or simply support a business that feels like part of the neighborhood, Birds and Bees Nursery is ready to welcome you in. Come as you are, leave with something green, and maybe even a new favorite place.
